Slopeswell Cider Co. emerges from flap over Spoke & Sail brand

Slopeswell_PrimaryLogoAfter a little detour precipitated by Full Sail Brewing’s claim to use of the word “sail” for beverage branding purposes, the guys behind the always morphing cider house at 1021 12th St. #102 have hit on a solution.

“We have now settled on Slopeswell as our new name,” says partner Jeff Nicol about the brand fine-tuning.

They originally launched as Spoke & Sail, but the folks at Full Sail said (kinda sorta) “Well, now, where you boys going with all that … Sail?” (See video below for this paraphrase to make sense).

For the foursome behind Spoke & … Whatever, it ws time to retreat, reload, relaunch.

“With the ‘no ‘sail’ in ‘Spoke and Sail’ ‘ fiasco, we had reverted to our 12 Ciders LLC name as a temporary fix,” Nicol says.

Customers got to weigh in with ideas that might work with the cool double-S logo designed for the guys by local designer Chad DeWilde.

The venture, a joint involving Nicol, Chip Dickinson, John Metta and Stefan Guemperlein, will soon sport a newly Slopeswelled website and social media presences.

“A couple of weeks,” Nicol says.

Meanwhile, enjoy this trip into Oregon’s marketing history …
